Imjin War - MT Miniatures "At The Height Of Battle" 1/1200th Ships

Here are the ships that come with the "At The Height Of Battle" starter set. My buddy is painting his set up and once he's done, we'll have a play test or two.

The ships are very nicely detailed and had no flash or other bits to clean up. Besides the "castle" for the Japanese O Ataka Bune command ship, the only components to put together are the sails (the small Seki Bune don't have sails).
To more easily identify the two sides, I gave the Japanese red and yellow flags and the Koreans black and dark blue.
After attaching the ships to the plasticard with textured acrylic caulking, they were given a white basecoat. Vallejo Skin Wash with a little Black Wash was applied over the ships to simulate wood. This was later drybrush to highlight the raised areas - including the oars (barely visible at the waterline, but they're there).
The sails were painted in layers - starting with a neutral gray, then two successive lighter layers with a little white added.
For the water, I used about a 65:35 mixture of Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue and Deep Green (it actually is a bit greener in-person - a sort of teal blue). The mixture was watered down a bit to allow it to seep into the acrylic caulking, and leaving the high areas lighter and having a translucent finish. Finally, a light drybrush of white was added to the crest of the waves and wake.

ADDENDUM: Found these pics from back when I was stationed in Korea (2002-2003-ish). We went onto a Turtle Ship replica at Namhae. We were the only ones there and no one else around - we went into the replica ship and there was a table with weapons and armor, so me and my sons put some on. We walked all around inside the ship and it had mannequins in period costume manning the ship and guns.
We just strolled onto the ship with no one around - no entrance fee that I could see. There was also a shrine up on the hillside dedicated to Admiral Yi. We check it out too - again, with no one around.
The armor was really heavy as it had metal plates sewn inside of the cloth.
While awaiting my buddy to finish his ships, I have a box each of Victrix Austrian Grenadiers and Perry AWI British and Continentals to peruse. Thanks for stopping by and hope you all are doing well and enjoying the hobby!

    1. Thank you so much, Jonathan. Yes, these small ships took a bit for me to figure out how to paint them; but once I found the process it went quickly enough. Kindest regards, Dean

  6. Brilliant. I don't game these sort of scales. But I do love little ships they remind me very much of Man O War by GW.

    1. Thanks, Simon! I agree this is a tiny scale - in fact, I wish they had ships for this period in a larger scale - maybe 1/700th or so. Warmest regards, Dean

    1. Thanks, Mario! I do like the way the water turned out - didn't want it too blue - so the slight green tinge is nice. Warmest regards, Dean

    2. Did you use Contrast paints ? If not , I can recommend them. I used them for my Armada Basileans ships.

    3. Not this time - just washes and watered down Vallejo paints. I've seen a few posts about contrast paints, but haven't tried them yet.

    1. Thanks, Keith. Besides Imjin War, the only other naval gaming interest was Actium - which I have some 1/1200th ships for and gamed a few times. As for the Turtle Ship visit - might've been an off day (season). In fact, the whole city seemed really dead that day. But this was back in 2002 or 2003, so who knows now. Kindest regards, Dean

  15. This post almost got by me. Dude I was not impressed with the metal minis, but your paint job has changed how I feel. These aren’t bad at all. Paint on them brings out their little eye pleasing details. Simply paint job to boot.

Those pictures of you and your boys almost 20 years ago are great! Got me reminiscing. Not that you guys did this on purpose, but when I was loaned out for work in East L.A. January 2011 three workmates and myself went to see the Queen Mary and the Soviet Sub in Long Beach. We were able to sneak onboard through an unguarded ramp before it opened for tours (I think it was also being used as a hotel at time) and had the run of the ship for about 45 minutes before it opened to public. We felt like we just pulled off an Ocean’s 11 movie scene. Though later we had to pay to get onboard the Scorpion. A glorious day it was!

    Cheers

    1. Thanks, Kevin. The ships have good details which made the wash and highlights effective. Wow, the QM all by yourselves, huh. That must've be a bit eerie being so huge. My dad was a welder for the Navy at Pearl Harbor - he worked on a lot of ships in the 60's and 70's. I can't remember which one, but he was proud to have gotten an 8X10" photo of a nuclear sub he had worked on autographed by the skipper.

      Kindest regards, Dean

  16. They look great! I am back from travel and will be working on my fleets this weekend. Hopefully they will be finished soon so we can get this gunboat battle going!

  17. What a great overview of At the Height of Battle and its ships. Those pics of a turtle ship replica and armor really add to the background theme of this period. Thanks for such a great post on the Imjin War and turtle ships for those of us who have had nothing but Osprey's Fighting Ships of the Far East (2) as a resource for this period. Great stuff!

  18. Late to the party here, but those are beautifully painted ships.

I keep meaning to put together a couple of fleets of these, although being a cheapskate I'll be doing some cheap and cheerful scratchbuilds :)
