Well, just wrapped up playing my first game of Swordpoint at my buddy's place. I brought some of my Celt/Britons to help beef up the Dacian force. It was a fun game with 8 players - all of us playing the rules for the first time. I don't have the rules yet, but most of the others had them and had read through them already. Of course, being authored by Martin Gibbins, there is a strong WAB flavor to the rules. However, being my first time with them, it took me a few turns to figure out the sequence of play. I ran several units of Dacians, and was made the overall commander with Decebalus in my care. We played what I believe were about 3 or 4 turns, but again, the sequence of play kind of threw me off a bit. Mainly, the shooting phase being simulatenous and the movement phase following declaration of charges and reactions to the same sort of confused me a bit. Overall it was fun, and for a first time, not bad at all. Not sure when we'll be playing it again though. Here are a few pictures from the game I managed to take.
My buddies like trying out rules and have a lot of different sets. Some of which we've only played a few times before moving on to other sets.On the paint desk, started on the Duchy of Warsaw command set. After that, plan to finally playtest my Imjin War Siege of Ulsan game. This needs to be done as I've already signed up to host it at our big convention, Enfilade, in May. Until next time, wishing you all the best and thanks for stopping in to check out the blog!
I thought that this system is quite dead up to this date.
ReplyDeleteLol! Didn't realize it. Not sure why my buddies got into it, but glad I got to try it out. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteA very colourful looking game Dean, although you sound a bit unconvinced by the rules you used?!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith. Yes, another buddy and I agreed afterwards that we didn't like them. The mechanics, mainly the sequence of play, seemed disjointed. Didn't flow smoothly, IMO. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteGreat looking game Dean!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michal. It was nice playing it with friends, but don't plan on getting into the rules myself. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteWAB influence makes sense. Because of Saga I never tried these out. But I've never seen them played anywhere in Michigan. The board and minis looked really nice. I've always said when I go to convention games it's not about the game, it's how good it looks!

Thanks, Kevin. Yes, it's got some WAB flavor, but didn't flow as smoothly as I thought it should. Definitely not like Saga 😀 Best regards, Dean
DeleteGreat looking game Dean! I'm an Impetus player so likely won't try these rules from what I understand about them. I did try Hail Caesar and liked it, but wish they had a better QRS to understand things easier and I would like to try Too The Strongest at some point.

Thanks, Christopher. I've used a simplified version of Hail Caesar for some of my games, especially when I host it at conventions. I like the activation part best. I I'll allow players to have one unit with a free move on failed activations. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteVery Nice Dean that looks great. I to could be tempted to give these a try.

Thanks, Stu. It was nice to try them out, but don't plan on getting more into them in the future. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteSuper looking game Dean.
