Another Beutepanzer, this time from the Second World War. This is a 1:48th scale plastic kit (with a few metal parts) from Hobby Boss of a captured Russian KV-1 with a modified turret sporting a German 7.5cm KwK 40 gun. I don't know how to use an airbrush, so brushed on the camo with watered down paint and then dry-brushed over it to soften the look. I also gave it a wash of Future/Pledge floor wax mixed with Vallejo Black Ink and Flesh Wash. After the wash it was dry-brushed again very lightly with the base color - Tamiya Dark Yellow. In the image below, a Victory Force Mini's FJ is next to it for size comparison.
At arms length, the camo doesn't appear too bad - for brushed on. I cut the hatch to have it opened, and need to add TC later.A few shots comparing it with a 1:50th scale Corgi Panther and a 1:48th scale New Millennium Panzer IV.I think the KV-1 756 was something in-between these two "proper" German tanks. Maybe even better armored than the Panther. For the record, I "airbrushed" the camo on the Panther many, many years ago with one of those cheap Testor's airbrushes with aerosol compressed air cans - it kept sputtering the paint out - I was lucky to get this far on it before it quit on me.Although the hull/chassis of the KV-1 seems slightly lower than the Panther, the taller turret makes up for the height difference.
Great looking tanks Dean!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Mike. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteLooks good to me.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your kind words! Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteA fine bit of Armor there, Dean!
ReplyDeleteNow back to the Napoleonics! :-)
Thanks, Peter. Yes, time to ho back in time. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteTank looks fine, I have tried airbrush but could get the hang with drying up paint and I was too impatient. Your camo looks absolutely fine to me more than adequate for gaming 👍
ReplyDeleteThanks, Matt. For the purposes of gaming, the brush on camo works out okay. If this were some kind of display-only kit, then an airbrush would be better. That said, I doubt I'll ever get an airbrush - too much to learn and too much maintenance for my tastes. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteLooking great Dean!
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly, Michal! Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteA real BEAUT! Dean, well done.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Got it, Paul. Thanks so much. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteSplendid work on the Beutepanzer KV.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Scrivs! It's an unusual looking beast - the turret makes it look almost like a Pershing. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteCamo doesn't look too bad? Brilliant job, Dean! Beautiful model and a nice comparison of the three.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jonathan! Yes, a proper gaming model for sure. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteDean,
ReplyDeleteGreat tank and something different for the German forces. The camo looks great especially because, to me, it looks like it was applied in the field. Another brilliant addition to your collection.
Neil
Thanks, Neil! Yes, I get to use a Russian tank without having to paint up Russian infantry :) Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteThe captured KV-1 is a very rare model. Thank you, very interesting 8)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Denis! Yes, quite a unique look to it - especially German colors. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteGreat looking KV1 and the camo looks great, I don't do airbrush's even though I used to spray things for a living, I just found you had to do so much cleaning and I paint miniatures to relax!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks for the kind words and info, Iain. Yes, I totally agree about the effort vs. results on using an airbrush. I honestly don't do that many projects (tanks, etc.) to justify airbrushing - although the end results are better than brush on work. And yes, the hobby is to relax and enjoy, not to break too much of a sweat :) Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteNicely done Dean! Hobby Boss make great kits!
ReplyDeleteAirbrushing is an arcane art which I am only slowly getting to grips with now. There’s a lot to learn but the effort is already worth it even at the beginner stage. Can’t really use it for my 6mm figures though........
Thanks, Mike. I'm hoping to get a Hobby Boss KV-2 in German service sometime. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteThat KV looks superb Dean! Very much like your hand painted camo. While I personally use an airbrush for camo (speeds things up) I actually think it's overrated. You can get a nice, clean result but that has little to do with how it looked on the real thing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the very kind words, Nick! I think for gaming, brush on camo works okay, but for display really can't beat the airbrush (cleaning and maintenance aside). Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteYou did a beaut job of these Dean. They are boss!
ReplyDeleteRegards, James
Thanks, James! Hobby Boss! :) Best regards, Dean
DeleteGreat work on KV-1 Dean! It looks really nice! The tank scale matches the other's quite well.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dmitry - yes, pretty imposing size of tank that KV is. Best regards, Deawn
