Pz.Kpfw KV-1 756(r) by Hobby Boss

Another Beutepanzer, this time from the Second World War. This is a 1:48th scale plastic kit (with a few metal parts) from Hobby Boss of a captured Russian KV-1 with a modified turret sporting a German 7.5cm KwK 40 gun. I don't know how to use an airbrush, so brushed on the camo with watered down paint and then dry-brushed over it to soften the look. I also gave it a wash of Future/Pledge floor wax mixed with Vallejo Black Ink and Flesh Wash. After the wash it was dry-brushed again very lightly with the base color - Tamiya Dark Yellow. In the image below, a Victory Force Mini's FJ is next to it for size comparison.

At arms length, the camo doesn't appear too bad - for brushed on. I cut the hatch to have it opened, and need to add TC later.
A few shots comparing it with a 1:50th scale Corgi Panther and a 1:48th scale New Millennium Panzer IV.
I think the KV-1 756 was something in-between these two "proper" German tanks. Maybe even better armored than the Panther. For the record, I "airbrushed" the camo on the Panther many, many years ago with one of those cheap Testor's airbrushes with aerosol compressed air cans - it kept sputtering the paint out - I was lucky to get this far on it before it quit on me.
Although the hull/chassis of the KV-1 seems slightly lower than the Panther, the taller turret makes up for the height difference.

Well, so much for tanks, now I will get back to the Napoleonic Russians from Perry; two cannon/crew and mounted commanders. Thanks for stopping by the blog and checking it out. Wishing you all the very best!

  3. Tank looks fine, I have tried airbrush but could get the hang with drying up paint and I was too impatient. Your camo looks absolutely fine to me more than adequate for gaming 👍

    1. Thanks, Matt. For the purposes of gaming, the brush on camo works out okay. If this were some kind of display-only kit, then an airbrush would be better. That said, I doubt I'll ever get an airbrush - too much to learn and too much maintenance for my tastes. Warmest regards, Dean

  8. Dean,
Great tank and something different for the German forces. The camo looks great especially because, to me, it looks like it was applied in the field. Another brilliant addition to your collection.

  10. Great looking KV1 and the camo looks great, I don't do airbrush's even though I used to spray things for a living, I just found you had to do so much cleaning and I paint miniatures to relax!

    1. Thanks for the kind words and info, Iain. Yes, I totally agree about the effort vs. results on using an airbrush. I honestly don't do that many projects (tanks, etc.) to justify airbrushing - although the end results are better than brush on work. And yes, the hobby is to relax and enjoy, not to break too much of a sweat :) Warmest regards, Dean

  11. Nicely done Dean! Hobby Boss make great kits!
Airbrushing is an arcane art which I am only slowly getting to grips with now. There’s a lot to learn but the effort is already worth it even at the beginner stage. Can’t really use it for my 6mm figures though........

  12. That KV looks superb Dean! Very much like your hand painted camo. While I personally use an airbrush for camo (speeds things up) I actually think it's overrated. You can get a nice, clean result but that has little to do with how it looked on the real thing.

    1. Thanks for the very kind words, Nick! I think for gaming, brush on camo works okay, but for display really can't beat the airbrush (cleaning and maintenance aside). Warmest regards, Dean
