Perry Napoleonic Russian 6 Pounders

These are the two artillery sets that come with the "Brigade Deal," along with 6 boxes of plastic infantry and three mounted commanders.

I really enjoy painting Russian Napoleonic foot uniforms, as the green-red color combination looks good, and they lack some of the more intricate uniform details of the French and British; different color lapels, lacing and piping (although the artillery and jaegers do have a little bit of the latter on cuffs and collars).
The green for the jackets could be darker, I suppose, but I've used about a 50:50 mix of Vallejo Model Color Deep Green and Vallejo Game Color Dark Green - mainly because I have them on hand. Plus, the Minwax staining seems to darken it a bit. I also gave the folds some highlights of lighter greens. At least they should be easily identified on the gaming table.
To flesh out the Russian force, I recently placed another order from the Perrys; two 12 pounders, two unicorns, some skirmishing Jaeger and the command set with a sitting Kutuzov.
I'll start on the three mounted commanders next, as long as work issues don't flare up. Still teleworking, thankfully - hopefully I can milk this set up for a few more years until retirement. That all said, wishing you all good health and happy hobby pursuits!

  1. Great guns, Dean! I hope you can extend teleworking until retirement too. With many teleworking in the Puget Sound, has traffic congestion lessened?

    1. Thanks for the kind words and interests, Jonathan. I think traffic (particularly on I-5 and some of the usual trouble spots like Hyw 167 and 405) are about 75% as congested prior to the initial lock down. That said, it's can still get pretty bad during work travel hours. A lot of the small private sector companies have gone out of business though. Thanks again for stopping by and leaving great comments! Dean

  2. Dean,
Great guns - one of the few items I don't like painting due to the wheels, spokes, etc. Very good job. And I do remember that I-5 corridor!

    1. Thanks, Neil. I usually undercoat the whole artillery piece in black and dry-brush the carriage and wheels - and a little more carefully the wheel rims and metal reinforcements. A good wash/stain usually takes care of blemishes, etc. The one thing I found out living off an on in WA State for over 20 years is I've never been to a place where you can get rock chips on windshields so much. I just got a ding thing morning going to work in Olympia - just 20 miles away. I've had more windshield rock chips here than I can count. Kindest regards, Dean

  4. So that's 2 x 6 lbers with crews then, right? The 12 lbers and Licornes on the way sound good, but for a Russian Army you probably need another pair of 6 lber foot guns at least, plus a horse battery for that huge swath of infantry that you painted up. The Russians do love their Guns! :-)

    1. Thanks, Peter. Yes. I understand they had a lot of artillery and the crews very protective of them. I may have to add some horse artillery. Warmest regards, Dean

  5. Lovely looking guns. This Perry's 'Brigade Deal' is very handy. A lot of infantry (I think you can make up to 10 battalions), some guns and commanders. I hope, when you finish your Russians, you'll show us the whole army.

    1. Thanks, Bartek - yes, I built 10 24-man battalions - however, I did order 4 individual command sprues. So, I actually still have 16 marching figures left over. I will definitely take a "family" photo once I get most of the units done. Warmest regards, Dean

  7. Nice work Dean, cracking through the project 👍 working from home seems to have become the normal although I can say I enjoy it very much. It’s better than not having a job, an d I only realistically have a couple of years to go. Then if my wife lets me I can become a full time wargamer 🤔

  9. Love your Russian guns Dean. The Russian Horse Artillery was allegedly as good as the French (just not generally used as effectively) and as I recall Front Rank make a superb set (as do Perry's of course). I'm amazed at the numbers and the speed at which you painted up your Brigade 'deal' - they look awesome en masse with those flags!

    1. Thank you so much, Doc! I actually went back over the infantry to "whiten" up their trousers. In the photo, they just had a Minwax stain over a white sprayed on undercoat. Looks a lot more Russian with the trousers whiter - and the undercoating left looks good for shading. Kindest regards, Dean

  13. Nice Dean, reminds me of like 30 years ago when the only choice for Russians where minifigs. Back then we thought they were all the rage. Now not so much. Good times.... am I getting old or are sculpts getting better, or is it both.

    Cheers

    1. Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Kevin. A few years ago, I was given a bunch of Connoisseur Russians - all in the same pose, but they looked good in formation. Here's a link to an earlier blog post with them https://wabcorner.blogspot.com/2012/03/connoisseur-russian-infantry-ready-for.html Kind regards, Dean

    2. Whoa dude, 2012! They look posed like minifigs to. Nice paint job on those almost 10 years ago, and with what you had to work with they came out great.

    3. Thanks, Kevin! At the time, wasn't planning on building much of a Russian army - just odds and ends, here and there, units.
