Gripping Beast Late Roman Infantry - WIP

Just got a copy of Age of Invasions for SAGA, and also a box each of Gripping Beast Late Roman Infantry and Cavalry from a buddy. This is the same buddy who gave me the 1/48th tanks and many other stuff he's had collecting dust over the years. In fact, he actually has a Late Roman warband for SAGA that are all metal figures. Seems a lot of my buddies had ordered plastic kits only to find out that they don't like plastics and return to metals. Here's the infantry set with my usual block painting followed by Minwax staining. Still debating if I will handpaint (simple designs) the shields or use LBMS transfers. I may do both - paint the simple ones and order ones with more intricate (hard to paint) designs.

And how they looked prior to the staining. The painted examples on the leaflet shows really impressive brushwork on the tunic patches. There's no way I'd be doing any of that - I just painted the engraved areas with solid colors, and hopefully the staining will make them look okay.
I think these are my first Gripping Beast figures, definitely first plastic set, and I am very happy with them. The paint up nicely, particularly with the tunic designs being sculpted in, and the seem very sturdy for gaming.

Speaking of gaming, our local SAGA group is having our usual game day (twice a month) next week. I'm bring a revised Greek warband - this time using the Italiote faction. Hopefully I'll use my SAGA dice and battle board more effectively than last time. Thanks again for stopping by and hope you're enjoying the summer.

  1. It’s like a revolving door with you and me, I’m painting Bolt Action, and now you’ve gone down the Saga rabbit hole.

I like the Hun list in Age of Invasions and my buddy nearly has the Goth Cavalry list done.

    Cheers

    1. Thanks, Kevin. Yes, a circle of "life" :) The Huns would likely suit my playing style better than Romans, but since my friend gave me the box, and I do like the looks of their shields and tunics, I figure I'll do up a warband of them. Maybe delve into the Huns later. Kindest regards, Dean

  2. Looking great, Dean! You never tackle anything in half measure, do you? You’ll have these fellas fighting in no time. Enjoy your Saga saga.

    1. Thanks, Jonathan. Yes, I do like to do up figures in batches - particularly ones like these that are sort of in uniform. I actually find it harder to paint figures individually. :) Kindest regards, Dean

  3. Nice going Dean, no doubt, they are already done by the time I make this post :-)

I like the end result of plastic, particularly the lightness, but I hate putting multi-part figures together.

    1. Thanks, Norm. Figures will soon be done, but will still need to work on the shields - may order some from LBMS too. These only had heads and right arms needing to be glued on, so pretty simple. Warmest regards, Dean

    1. Thanks, Michal. These won't be painted anywhere to your standards, but they'll get into some SAGA games soon. Warmest regards, Dean

    1. Thanks, Iain. I really like this Gripping Beast set - they have minimal parts to glue together and the poses make them good for ranking up too. Kindest regards, Dean

  7. They look great Dean and sound like my kind of plastic ie not Victrix...which have about ten parts per figure....aarrrggghhh! On a side note, you seem to have a lot of generous mates (buddies) donating some great kit to your cause!

    1. Thanks, Keith. These are very nice gaming figures - and go together very quickly. Yes, my buddy is quite a generous guy. In the past, he's also given several boxes of Victrix Napoleonic British (as well as metal figures) too. I think he bought plastics before realizing he didn't want to spend the time and effort to glue them together. I don't mind the process, and actually find it a bit relaxing to do. Kindest regards, Dean

    1. Thanks, Richard. Yes, I'm really lucky to have a buddy (a few others too), that are so generous. I think they see their old purchases sitting collecting dust in their garage and figure it's better to have them painted up and gamed than to sit there any longer. Kindest regards, Dean
