Perry Napoleonic Russian Infantry - Good Enough For Wargaming

Finished them up today - not the best quality painting, but good enough for the table top. This was a down and dirty project with broad brushstrokes and heavy reliance on Minwax staining.

I didn't do any highlighting after the staining as I wanted to see how they look without the effort. I have to say, massed in close ranks, they seem to look okay. The only things I did "above and beyond" was dry-brushing the grenadier plumes and adding a flesh wash after the staining to the face and hands.
Some of the flags were downloaded from the Warflags-Napflags website - which I've been using for many years; so happy to see it's still up and running.
Speaking of the flags; besides the one for the Pavlov Grenadiers, the rest were used mainly because I liked the pattern and colors. I even used the one from the Perry box that is supposed to be for a Marine regiment.
Still have two cannon and the three mounted commanders from the Perry "deal" to work on. Thanks for stopping by the ol' blog and wishing you all the very best.

  1. WOW! Dean, this is an impressive block of work. For many of us, this would represent several months of hard work. The flags add a lot of nice color. Great job!

  3. So impressive Dean a Russian army in a matter of days !!!!! Thing is you can always add in other units but being able to focus and deliver these core units in that time is astounding ! 👍

  6. Dean ....I knew the title would be a gross under statement! These are very nice indeed and to have painted this HUGE force in around a week or ten days is unbelievable - it would take me at least one week per unit, and that would be if I did nothing else in the evening except paint for three to four hours - your output is staggering!

    1. Thank you so much for the compliment, Keith! Yes, for some reason, I was able to spend some long sessions on this project. I think the production line way I painted them really paid off. That is, I did all 240 of them for each step. Warmest regards, Dean

  8. What a turn around and they look great on mass, as a friend of mine always says its really easy to be critical of your own efforts when you look at them so closely when painting them, but in gaming terms you are always 2-3 ft away.... so we can all afford to be a little more in or brush strokes. So impressed buddy...

  12. Snap, crackle, and pop! A friend says to Dean, "Hey Dean lets start playing some Napoleonic's.". Dean says, "okay I don't have any figures, give me a day or two.". Dean goes to friends house a couple days later with an entire divisions worth of troops and says, "Okay are you ready to play!". Friend, mouth hangs open.....

    1. Thanks, Bartek! I like the Russian infantry uniforms a lot better than French or British. No lacing or piping on the collars and cuffs. Practical, and the green and red facings are a nice color combination. Kindest regards, Dean

  19. Dean,
Yep they look great. It seems you go for the same idea I do: "What does it look like at gaming distance?" At least that's the excuse I use now that I have to paint with reading glasses!

    1. Thanks for the kind words and visit, Neil. Yes, there's a time for painting little details, and there are times when it really isn't necessary. Mass formed troops are the latter. Warmest regards, Dean

  25. These are about as good a job as I ever do with my own Russians, maybe better! That's 240 figures painted and based in 10 days. Yikes!

As always the colorful Russian standards really enhance the units.
