OG 2nd Ed. 1809 French - WIP

Just a quick WIP update. Using a method picked up from Doug Hamm (Larry Leadhead's alter ego), the buttons and other metallic parts have been painted before the coat itself. Next will be the piping and cuffs, collars and lapels. This is a reverse order of the usual way most people paint - myself included. However, it works well with Napoleonics as it allows for areas of the black undercoat to remain - in effect already having areas blacklined.

  1. Hey Dean, how fast is this method? and what do you think of it? I usually undercoat my 28mm Naps white, but black is better for missed areas, and I always open to ideas.

  2. I always black undercoat 25mm, but I never paint the gold and silver first, its a strange way of painting, but if it works...it works!!

  3. I will try to have the coat done next & post the pics - hopefully it will work. I do like how the small details like the buttons are more clearly seen while still black. Best, Dean

  4. For all those reading about this style of painting; To REALLY have this technique, one must start painting the buttons, then the cuffs, then the sleeves. WHAT?! you say! Well after doing all that fine stuff, your brush will not want to touch those areas already done. Thus will tend to leave the area around them undone. With a black undercoat/primer, this area is black and becomes an immediate outline rather than trying to go back after the fact as Dean will show in his subsequent posts.

However it is an acquired taste, and so the wargaming debate continues whether to primer one's miniatures in black or white. Art is art of course and what is good is to the eye of the beholder. Both schools have their advantages. We have seen Dean use both to great effect.

Actually quite the debate occurs between the two groups of each camp. Out of the white vs. black argument happened some very colorful language I can tell you! ;-)
