Here they are painted up as a unit each of Parliamentarians in orange sashes and Royalists in red sashes.
The horses are very nicely sculpted in halves which can be mixed and matched for variety. I used two can of brown spray paint to speed up the process. Tails, manes and horse furniture were then painted and finally given a Minwax stain. It's the only way I paint up quantities of cavalry. As with the foot figures, helmets or hats are added to the riders' heads. One thing with these are the nasals and face guards on the helmets. Once glued on the heads, about the only thing I could do was use a thin brush to dab flesh color on portions of the face between the face guards.Otherwise, very nice figures and enjoyable to paint up.I may add flags to the poles, but the sashes should identify which side the units are with.I really like this range from Warlord Games - nice figures that aren't too hard to paint. I may add a few more foot and cavalry later; Scots Covenanters in gray coats and blue bonnets sounds appealing - and Cuirassiers as well. However, if I do, I'll need to get another can of Minwax as the one I bought last year is just about out. Thank you all very much for stopping by and wishing you all the best!
Great cavalry Dean!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Mike! Best regards, Dean
DeleteThere was only one full unit of Cuirassiers in the ECW.
ReplyDeleteAh, nice to know, Simon. Appreciate the info - may have to delve into TYW someday too. Best, Dean
DeletePainting 24 cavalry in only a few days is a very impressive feat, Dean. That they look so great is doubly impressive. Nice!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot, Jonathan! Using rattle can spray for base coating the horses really speeds things up. That and minimal details/highlighting on the horses. Save most of my effort for the riders as the focus is mainly on them. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteLooking ace!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Nick! Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteSplendid looking horse troop! I really like the warlord civil war horse,I'm prepping up two units of cuirassiers, Simon is right there is only one formal unit, but I'll use the other one as the kings bodyguard and I need them for the 30 years war!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks, Iain. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the horses are. Very happy with this range. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteDean, a great result with the spray cans, what a good idea.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Norm! Yes, rattle can browns and greys work well for horses that will be in rank and file formations. I really tend to focus more on painting the riders. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteTwo lovely units. Very nice painting. I really like the Warlord plastic P&S horses. They make fine, big horses for cavalry.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! Yes, they are nice horses - not overly large and nicely proportioned. Best regards, Dean
DeleteThey look great, Dane! Horses have crisply and neatly painted and I never thought you used spray if you didn't mention it.
ReplyDeleteThank you much as always, Dmitry. After the spray paint basecoat, Minwax staining seems to blend the colors in nicely. Best regards, Dean
DeleteGreat looking cavalry Dean.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Stu
Thanks so much, Stu! Best regards, Dean
DeleteFive star Dean!!!

DeleteLooking awesome Dean!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Michal! Kind regards, Dean
DeleteLovely work I think I might be sold 👍
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot, Matt! Appreciate your visit and kind words. Best regards, Dean
DeleteGreat work on these Dean, I do like ECW and was tempted by the Warlord plastics, but reckon I've painted and sold far too many forces for it to start again.
ReplyDeleteI think some standards would really polish them off
Thanks, Scrivs! ECW is quite a varied period - from the "pre" Bishops' War to Cromwell's Irish and Scottish campaign. Throw in the witch trials and you have about everything for scenarios! Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteMore lovely ECW figures well up to your usual high standards Dean - I don't think I have mentioned it previously but your basing also really shows them off to advantage!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your kind words, Keith. The basing is also my usual way; acrylic caulking with irregularly applied sand/coffee grounds and static grass. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteSuperb! I love them both!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words, Bartek! Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteLovely horse, Dean! They definitely need the flags, though! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Peter! Yes, I will have to add some soon. Kindest Regards, Dean
DeleteYou are motivating me to dig out my figs, but I'll paint mine as Royalists - 2 regiments and a cannon on hand now for assembly. SA
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! Yes, you certainly should - I do want to do a unit of King's guard in red too. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteThis is brilliant stuff. Great work on these minis.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the kind words!
