Experienced another fine Fix Bayonet game day at Fort Steilacoom. Now that I live just a few miles away, it was even more enjoyable than usual. I missed most of the morning session as I had a dental appointment, but was still able to check out the morning games and talk to the local crew.
I hosted the Franco-Prussian War Bolt Action game. As there were several other great going on, I was lucky to get four players in my game. Here's some pics from today's event.

Bavarians and Prussian Jager advancing on a French occupied village. |

Bavarian infantry at a disadvantage in rifle range. I gave the French Chassepot rifles a 24" range to the Prussian and Bavarian Dreyse Needle Gun's 18" range. I did give the Prussians a Morale of 9 and the French 8 to somewhat balance it out. |

Zouaves and Turcos using their longer range rifles to good effect. |

On the projects front, I've hit a bit of a slump - probably due to things picking up at work. However, I received another order from North Star in record time - about a week and a half. A small unit of Prussian Cuirassiers and 4pdr await the paint brush. Also, succumbing to the temptations of Warlord Games' recent Summer Sale, I ordered the F&IW Black Powder supplement as well as the Age of Bronze Hail Caesar supplement. Oh, and last but not least, I ordered the El Alamein Bolt Action set - just couldn't pass it up at the price. Again, thanks for dropping by and happy painting and gaming!
Looks like a fun day after the trip to the dentist was out of the way!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jonathan. Yes, quite enjoyable - especially after having titanium implant screw put in yesterday and a filling in today. Actually, quite painless and nice to have good choppers. Warmest regards, Dean

DeleteSo Dean I am interested in knowing if any grognards of the period played in the game and their thoughts about if the rules gave a period feel. Hopefully everyone had a good time at it.
ReplyDeleteThe setup looks nice, and of course, as I've mentioned in past posts, look very nice.
Cheers
Kevin
that should say.... and of course the minis, ....
DeleteThanks, Kevin! Well, I'd say except for myself - they were all grog's. Some playing wargames of various sorts, like board games, since the late 60's. In fact, in their opinion, they felt Bolt Action suited this period even better than WW2. Some play Chain of Command and other WW2 skirmish games too. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteKevin, feel free to check out fellow blogger "A Gamer's Tale" - Kevin S. who played in my game - he has a review - and he'd be the first to tell you he could be considered a grognard having wargammed since the late-60's https://agamerstales.wordpress.com/2019/09/15/fix-bayonets-the-day-of-the-horsemen/
DeleteThanks Dean I certainly will. Happy you hit a sweet spot. It's been ages since I've played Franco-Prussian war stuff and there weren't that many good rule sets. I remember a Flames of War kind of one that was fun but almost to simple.
DeleteCheers
Kevin
Great, Kevin. I think you'll enjoy his blog - past and present. BTW, the reason I got into FPW was a box of Perry ACW Zouaves! Then I recalled the Eagles of Empire range specifically for FPW skirmish. I figured go for it and only later thought of using Bolt Action - mainly for it's simplicity. It really flows well for skirmishing with a minimal variety of weapons. No RPG's or mortars or AFV's to bog down the play. In fact, the light cav recce evade manuever played out very nicely during the game play with the Prussian's limited range. I gave the Chassepot a 24" range and the Dreyse Needle Gun only 18". I compensated this by giving the Prussians a 9 for Moral and 8 for the French. With pins piling up, this really comes into play for Order tests. Kind regards, Dean
