Sir Thomas Holland, KG

Here's the last of the BTD Early-HYW mounted command figures - painted up as Sir Thomas Holland. He served under Edward III in campaigns in Flanders, Bayonne, and Brittany. He also fought at Crecy in the Prince of Wale's vanguard division.
Sir Thomas' arms are: Azure, florettee, and a lion rampant, guardant argent. The flail is another spare Old Glory weapon - with a brass rod used as the staff.
Sir Thomas died while serving in Brittany in 1360. He was a founding member of the Order of the Garter.
Here are some images of the three BTD knights from their Early-HYW mounted command pack. They'll be joined by some BTD foot knights as well as three Front Rank mounted knights.
Although the mounted figures themselves are a good match for other makes, the BTD horses are quite a bit larger than most others. Hopefully they won't be too noticeably larger than the Front Rank ones.
These figures will be part of a Lion Rampant English HYW retinue.

  1. Dean,

Your free hand work on Thomas is better than most people's decals. Oscar is my favorite, he's absolutely top notch, the colors and lining are perfect!

    1. Thanks, James - you're too kind. It's all about effect vs. accuracy. Best, Dean

P.S. Have you and your crew start Lion Rampant?

  2. Love the color and heraldry on this last knight in the trio. My favorite of the three is the knight in the red and white motif.

    Great knights!

P.S. That would Sir John Chandos - arguably the most famous of the three.

    1. Thanks for the nice comment, Phil. Yes the green (vert), yellow/gold (or) and red (gules) combo really is nice. The arms of William Marshal being a particular favorite of mine. Best, Dean

  4. Beautiful brushwork on those bardings! I'm painting fire-forge knights for Lion Rampant, so seeing your work here added plenty of inspiration on how to balance colors and patterns. Great stuff!

  9. Superb paintwork, the heraldry is great. Are the BTD Hundred Years War figures the same size as Front Rank? I am guessing if that is the case they would not match up well with the Foundry Figures size wise?

    1. Thank you very much, Oli. As far as sizing goes - the BTD horses would be the main issue - in fact, some of the BTD horses are larger than others. I haven't received the HYW foot knights yet, but the foot Normans I do have are on the larger side of 28mm. Although I don't have any Foundry HYW figs - they look like they'd be a bit smaller (shorter) than BTD. Best, Dean

    2. The BTD foot knights are a good enough match, style-wise, with the Foundry ex-Citadel figures... but they are larger. Like adults compared to adolescents!

Lovely painting, as always, Dean; you are a constant source of hobby inspiration.
