Blog Update - Victrix Ancients Works in Progress

Wow - I haven't been on Blogger for only about a week or so and it appears it has a new look - at least for creating new posts. Hopefully this one will work alright. Anyhow, here are some pics of what I have been working these past few days - off an on. A couple of Victrix Ancients sets - below is a shot of their Macedonian Phalangites after a Minwax staining over a basic block paint job.
Just some simple patterns on the linothorax - variations of red, purple and blue over white and yellow armor. The helmets also have red, purple and blue variations - as well as plain bronze.
Kind of sloppy block painting, but the nicely defined sculpting really made painting them enjoyable.

Next is a set of Gallic Cavalry which I painted last week - they still need their shields, which are awaiting the arrival of LBMS transfers. They're based in pairs on 60mm Litko plywood rounds.
Thanks again for stopping by and apologies for not visiting your blogs these past few days - I plan to be checking them out and see what I've been missing. Best to you all and happy painting and safe gaming.

  1. Storming through the plastics! Good looking phalangists and the Gallic cavalry are already looking smart!

    1. Thanks, Iain! Best thing is they can both be in a game together - thanks to the Gauls/Celts being opponents and allies with so many Ancients. Best regards, Dean

  3. Lovely Dean, full justice to the sculpt.

If you go back in to edit your post and click on each picture, you will get a pop-up with some symbols, I think it is the pencil icon that you click on - anyway, whichever one it is, it will give you the ability to resize your pictures. If you select LARGE, it should give you the biggest picture you can get without it spilling out of the post on the right hand side (which is what ‘extra large’ does). For whatever reason, it seams to default to extra large when you create a post, but that must surely be a setting thing that can be changed - I will explore that next time I post.

  5. Cracking work Dean. As for the new Blogger, I have already reverted to the original version. I couldn't get on with the posting of photographs.

    1. Thanks for the nice comment and instructions, Michael! I found the link to revert to the old way - it was pretty well hidden at the bottom of the choices, and not highlighted either. Dunno why IT folks seem to think new versions are always better. Warmest regards, Dean

  6. Ive been considering building a successor army in Victrix but was put off by the pikes etc. The effect youve used is excellent, Im going to give them a go and see if I can emulate your troops, well done.

    1. Thanks, Robbie. I like these pikes, I find the plastic fairly resilient - in fact, I've hand palmed them a couple of times by accident with no issues - either to my hand or the pikes. Also, the details on the linothorax and nicely defined and can take brushwork and washes/staining very well. I would not hesitate to pick up another set if I were to increase my pike unit, but at the moment I am only needing one unit of pike for a post-Heraclea Pyrrhic field army - after he lost most of his Macedonians at Heraclea and added Italo-Greeks and Oscan/Samnites. I already have the Victrix Samnites for this, so was inspired to get these. One more thing, I do wish Victrix would make some Phalangites without armor - maybe only helmets. Kindest regards, Dean

  7. Yeah I don’t like the new blogger, and if you select the old way, it’s only staying up until August 24th. But it’s free, I guess I can’t complain to much.

On your work, I dig the pikeman, I like the color you used on pikes.

    Cheers
    Kevin
