A Very Modest Start to the New Year

Just a single figure - a Foundry Macedonian officer that had been sitting in a bin for a few years. The shield is from 1st Corps with a Little Big Men Studios transfer.
I needed him to fill out a unit of Hypaspists that has been re-based for Hail Caesar. Previously these figures had been used as singles in skirmish order for WAB. They'll now be formed infantry as a Standard sized unit. I left the figures on their metal washers as they are hard to rank up with their spear thrusting poses.
In fact, I'm re-basing most of my figures for either Hail Caesar or Black Powder. That is, I'm moving away from single based figures. Although I don't game all that often, I'm tired of individual casualty removal. This especially when I have to re-rank figures with long spears or animated poses. Hence the move to Hail Caesar and Black Powder. A few weeks ago I used up some left over Litko 40mm squares to re-base some Ancients and Napoleonics. These figures were painted quite sometime ago - 2012 and earlier, so if some of you have seen them before, I apologize for the redundancy. But I do like how they now look as well as the ease of moving them now.
1st Corps Imitation Legionaries and Crusader Thureophoroi based as light infantry
Foundry Napoleonics and Front Rank Spanish Guerrillas based as either light  infantry or skirmishers
I plan to re-base more figures for Hail Caesar and Black Powder in the coming weeks for anticipated games I hope to host. I still haven't hosted the Imjin War game yet as the holidays overwhelmed most of my gaming buddies. This will have to be the first game to try out for 2014. Happy New Year to all of you, and thanks for visiting the blog.

  1. Great brushwork on the officer. Very nice! I, too, prefer large, single element maneuver units with no casualty removal so am firmly in your camp. What are the standard base sizes for Hail Caesar?

  2. Great looking figures Dean, its always a pain deciding how to base up figures, but I guess if you know the rules your going to use, that makes the decision a lot easier???

  3. Thanks for the nice words and interest, Jonathan and Ray.

Jonathan: HC & BC (same author) only suggest basing and unit sizes. Which is why I like them. Units are loosely based on frontages, and classed as Large, Standard, Small or Tiny. It's a very laxed system and if players are in agreement to unit classifications, there is no problem with units having slight differences in frontages. As I plan to provide both sides for games, I can class them as I see fit. Great stuff. Best, Dean

  4. Nicely painted officer. A small start to 2014, but I'm sure there will be more to come :)

  5. Looking good Dean. Haven't played either rule set so I can't offer you any insight on basing - except to say you are doing a good job.

  8. Hi Dean, I think multi-basing is a good call. As I accumulate more minis, I'm moving towards larger multibases. Where a base had 4 minis before, now it has 8 or 12. The figures are better protected and quicker to get on the table. Best, Simon

  10. A great start to 2014 and I am confident there will be more to follow. With you on single casualty removal - its just a pain. WAB works excellently as a large format skirmish game but falls down - in my opinion - at larger sized battles.

    Cheers, Ross

  13. Lovely work Dean! You're where I hope to be one day.

I'd love to do ancients in 28mm and I've been thinking of taking my SAGA skirmish figs and dropping them into Warlord bases for Impetus or Hail Caesar. Happy New Year!

  15. Multibasing is the way to go, my friend. Way more practical, and nicer to look at.

Anyway, very nice officer you have done.

    Happy new year.

  16. I completely understand Dean and I vastly prefer multi- basing whenever possible and only do single figures on sabot bases when wanting to play both skirmish and standard battle games.

  17. Thanks for the comments, Gents.

@ Christopher: Most of the figures I intend to leave singly-based are for personal game play; e.g. my own WHFB Empire army, etc.

    Warm Regards, Dean

  20. Modest he may be, but a splendid start to the year Dean.

  21. Nice work there. When I paint ancients now I do the majority of the units on multiple figure stands with a view to playing Hail Caesar but leave some singles in so that I can use them for WAB.

  22. Howzit Dean? All the best for the New Year to you - may the dice gods smile upon you!

Beautiful figures - I particularly like your Napoleonic skirmish figures - the Spanish guerillas get my vote. Hope we get to see all them in action soon!

    Cheers,
    Doc

  23. Great looking stuff Dean. And I agree with your thoughts on basing and individual casualty removal as being a pain - I always had a hell of time with my spear armed blocks of 40 barbarians for WAB... HC & BP are a fine way to go.

  24. Dean, you're right about not wanting to fiddle with hundreds of individual bases. They look much easier to transport.

Don't some of your homemade magnetic trays still allow troops to be pulled off for smaller skirmish games?

  25. Thanks for the great comments, Gentlemen. I suppose WAB can be played with casualty markers too - but I know some of the flavor is to see the visible attrition of units.

@ James (Baconfat) - I do, as the Hypaspists are, but most of the times, even with magnetized figures, movement becomes fiddly - figures falling off, etc.

Again, thanks for the comments and continued visits to the blog. Warm Regards, Dean

  26. Good start to the year. For some reason I cannot bring myself to base multiple figures on a base and I actually don't look at rules with element basing. I cannot think of any logical reason to be like this and many reasons to do element basing.

  27. I have always thought your Greeks looked outstanding. As far a re-basing your whole army, you aren't giving up on WAB are you? That would be a serious loss to our local WAB community. BTW, I need to get some serious practice in with you before Germany. Keep up the hobby!

  28. Thanks for the comments and interest, Gentlemen.

@ Pat - no worries about WAB options - the only changes to those armies will be the multi-basing of skirmishers. The close order troops are fine as is on their movement tray (and will remain singly-based).

    Warm regards, Dean

  29. I also prefer multi-figure basing, though I seem to have managed myself into a fair number of single-figure projects. Look forward to some Black Powder and Hail Caesar with you in 2014.
