Ii Naomasa in 120mm - Completed

Here's Ii riding on his pony.
Glad he's finally painted up after being stored in a box for a long time. He was an ebay purchase years ago - before I started painted wargaming figures. I only have a couple more old large scale resin kits remaining; which I'll eventually paint up. Waste not, want not is my mantra.
Admittedly I hesitated starting on him back in the day because of the fairly large number of separate parts. Now, they seemed like working on a box of 28mm figures - so went for it.
Although there a number of parts, they all fit together perfectly - including the reins - which on some kits are a bit fiddly.
Notice how small the horse is - which is historically accurate.
Below, Ii is with another 120mm resin kit which was painted many years ago; as well as some Perry 28mm figures for comparison.
Thanks for following this project. I hope to start on some Crusader Retiarii and laso dudes.

  3. Amazing to see the finished result - the horse came out really well too. Even if the work load is about the same as a box of 28', this just adds something completely different to a collection. It's a real centerpiece for your hobby shelf!

    1. Thanks, Soren. True about a box of 28's vs. one larger fig - pretty much the same amount of work, but different result - both of which are complimentary to each other IMO. Best, Dean

  4. Very nicely done. Must seem like a huge change from the 2mm Roman army you painted a few days ago.

    1. Thanks for your kind comment, Mike. To be honest, I started out with large scales and then discovered wargaming and 28mm - so it was a bit of a reverse for me. Although 28mm (and smaller) can be just as interesting and challenging. Warm regards, Dean

  11. Great Job Dean, very impressive! Co-incidentally I was re-watching Last Samurai last night with No.1 son who'd been playing Shogun Total War2 and wanted to watch something like it in the evening... Puts me in mind of the Samurai Cavalry charge from the film... nice one!

    1. Thanks, Scott. I do like the battle scenes in Last Samurai - as well as armor and uniforms throughout the movie. Although they blended parts of the Boshin War into the Satsuma Rebellion in two hours, it's actually pretty cool.

  12. I've been looking forward to seeing the completed model! What can I say? Beautiful is one word. It really is magnificent. You have some very impressive models there, Dean. Samurai demand so much attention to look really good - and you have succeeded and then some! I feel like finding the Airfix mounted Bengal Lancer in 1/12 scale which I attempted as a teenager and improving on it now. :-)
    Best wishes,
    Jason

    1. Thank you very much for your interest and kind words, Jason. Funny you mentioned the Lancer, I actually have that kit in the closet too:) I had intended to try and convert him into a Norman knight, but decided that would be way too involved. So, I may one day paint him up as is. Let me know if you decide to work on the figure and I'll try and do the same. Best, Dean

  14. Splendid work, Dean; I'm really enjoying what you're doing with these larger scale figures.

Now all you have to do is compete the remaining 200 figures in the army...!

    1. Thank you, Evan. Happy to hear you liked these large scale asides. I only have a few more left in storage to work on now. One is a 1/12th scale Airfix mounted Bengal Lancer - another ebay purchase from years ago.

As far as an army, I do have 240 Romans to paint up - luckily they are in 2mm ;)! Regards, Dean
