Except for the musician's grey, the rest of the horses were given a quick block paint job and then a wash of Minwax Tudor Satin stain. The blue cloth was given a little bit of highlights first. Here they are prior to staining.
Although not as varied and colorful as the French, the British Hussars have a smart appearance.
Wow, the horses alone look great - can't wait to see the riders!
ReplyDeleteFabulous equine brushwork there Dean. What are your overall impressions of these figures?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the continued interest & kind comments, Gentlemen.
ReplyDeleteHGA: Interesting you ask this - I was just musing how there are many good sculptors out there, but only with the Perrys you can rest assured the work is flawless. Not only expected from the Perrys, but always delivered as such. Specifically with these British Hussars - except for the officer, the riders are one piece except for the heads, right arm & pelisse. Speaking of the pelisse, if left off, there is nicely detailed equipment on the enlisted figures - forage bag, canteen, etc. Oh, and also I was thinking if you could get heads with Tarleton helmets, they would be pretty good for early Dragoons (sans pelisse). Best, Dean
The transformation with the stain is amazing... great work. I have a lot of cavalry to paint and will try the same approach.

ReplyDeleteI highly recommend the stain for horses. Gets them done in no time flat - plus very forgiving to the block painted undercoat. The stain will blackline the mane, tail, reins, etc. I used to be put off by painting cav - because of the mounts - but no longer since using the stain. Happy Holidays, Dean
And to you, Dean! Cheers, Simon
ReplyDeleteEnjoying the horses already and looking forward to their riders!

Nice job so far, I like the detail on the grey.
ReplyDeleteReally nice paint work on the gray. The Perry's sure have nice looking horses.
ReplyDeleteYou knocked those out extremely fast. Do you sleep like us ordinary mortals?
ReplyDeleteNice work Dean, these look great. I've a heap of ancient Gallic cav to do sometime and the results you achieved with the stain are very encouraging.
ReplyDeletehave a Merry Christmas mate.
guido.
The horses are just beautiful Dean. Very very nice paintwork.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your too kind words! The Minwax really does work well on horses. Happy Holidays! Dean
ReplyDeleteHow can you paint that fast with those great results?
ReplyDeleteLooking great so far! Every time I visit your blog my desire to put in an order and start my first Naps army for BP grows more and more. :-)
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Jason
Excellent work on those horses. You are right about the British/KGL - not as 'flash' as the French but they look very smart and businesslike. I did a few last year (in metal) and really enjoyed painting them. I look forward to seeing the rest of the regiment emerge from your table.
