Master of Signal with Auspex

Here is the figure made up of spare parts - the Auspex, legs, arms and torso from the Command Squad set, the head and bolter from a Ravenwing set. I don't have the current rulebook, but the the Auspex wasn't in the previous rulebook - which I have.
EDIT: found this on the DAKKA DAKKA site: "According to the 6th Edition Space Marine codex, "A model with an auspex can use it in place of making a shooting attack. If he does so, target an enemy unit within 12" (this does not count as choosing a target for his unit to shoot at). A unit that is targeted by one or more auspexes has its cover saves reduced by 1 until the end of the phase."
The antennae are scratch-built - the taller one is a brass rod with a base made from an Empire war hammer staff; the other one is a spare (unused) part from a Tamiya M10 kit - no idea what it was supposed to be.

For the record: 'An Auspex is a short-ranged scanner used by Space Marines to detect hidden enemy troops.' Codex: Space Marines (4th ed.), pg.23.
I also have a Mk1 Rhino I picked up off of ebay that is soaking in DOT 3 brake fluid to take the paint off. I used Simple Green but it still wasn't peeling the paint off fast enough. Here's what the tank looked like delivered - pretty good shape and had a cross decal for the Black Templars on the rear hatch.

  3. Thanks so much, James and Christoper, for visiting and your kind comments.

I do like painting Space Marines stuff; really only played the rules once - and that for only a short while.

    Warm Regards, Dean

  5. Lovely work Dean, your horde is growing!

I'm curious to hear about the paint stripping. I've only used Pine Sol and it's quite slow and fairly smelly.

  6. Nice work on the marine.

Must admit with going back to 40k a bit I dug out my old MkI rhinos and 'trimmed them back' - removed the hand rails from the sides as they always break... likewise the two arials - I'll replace with plastic broom bristles, and chopped off the front ram. Now they look much 'cleaner' and realistic...

  7. Great job. I don't think the auspex has had proper rules for a long time. The last time I saw its rules was way back in 2nd or 3rd Edition.

  10. Thanks for visiting and the nice comments, Gentlemen.

@ Ev - I've seen a few Rhinos and such painted up with "murals' on the large areas - might try something similar.

@ Scott - I might leave off the rails too - also, the arial already broke off during the paint striping :) Might replace them with flags or something.

I hadn't used brake fluid in a long time (before Simple Green came on the market), but it used to strip paint off old plastic models really well - never hurt the plastic.

    Warmest Regards, Dean

  11. Good use of your spares, and I can't imagine any space marine army being complete without a rhino. Brake fluid sounds powerful, hopefully it won't affect the plastic. eBay is good for cheap GW stuff. I got almost all my LOTR guys there.

  12. Interesting take on aerials on the marine. You don't typically see that but it looks very appropriate. Love it!

Good to see an old-skool rhino in there too. Good on you for thinking about a mural option, I'm always too rushed to try stuff like that...

    Cheers,
    Millsy

  16. Dean, we need to get you down to a hobby shop and playing some 40K. Your work and zeal is truly inspiring. Hopefully it will rub off on a few more people. I really like the old school rhino, and I might have an old school predator you can have to round out your force organization.

  17. Thanks, Pat - for your kind words as always. Hmmm, nowadays, for me zeal = maybe 1 figure a week, :) Warm regards in any case. Dean
