Perry Plastic Napoleonic Cavalry - WIP

Just applied Minwax Tudor Satin stain to 32 horses which will be the mounts for two units of French Chasseurs a Cheval, and a unit each of British Light Dragoons and Spanish Dragoons.
They will be in units of 8 figures each. Most of the horses were painted with inexpensive craft paints - Ceramcoat Burnt Umber and Apple Barrel Nutmeg Brown. The greys were painted with a mixture of Vallejo White and Americana Lamp Black - just what I had available at the time.
Here's what they looked like prior to the staining with the block paint job - and some highlighting.
Once the stain is dried completely - hopefully by tomorrow afternoon - they'll be Dullcote'd and touched up as needed. Then the riders will be started. Thanks for dropping by and best wishes to you all.

  1. That’s a lot of horses, Dean! Does MinWax work any differently on plastics vs metals?

  2. Thanks for your visit as always and interest. The stain works the same on plastics ir metal, asin my experience. One thing that I am aware of is the type of paint it is used over. Over aacrylics it works without issues. However, some enamels or oils, particularly metallics can sometimes dissolve if too much thinner is used with the stain. Otherwise, it works well for what it is intended. Kind regards, Dean

  4. Nicely done, with some nice variation, it is a bigger batch than I would have thought about doing in one go, but it does not look as scary as I would have thought :-).

Units of 8 - will you be basing in pairs?

    1. Thanks, Norm. Yes, in pairs on 50mm squares. 8 looks pretty good for smaller tables - either in line or double ranked with a 4 man front. Warm regards, Dean

  7. Motivation to dig up that French light cav brigade I have with 20 Chasseurs, 20 Hussars and a stand of horse artillery. Old Glory figs mostly. Scott A.

  10. Great looking horses for your ongoing Napoleonics project. The stain you use - what colour is it? Might look into UK alternatives.

    1. Hello, Ross. The stain is Minwax Polyshades Tudor Satin 360 - here's a link to it via Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Minwax-213604444-Polyshades-Stain-Polyurethane/dp/B0044USWXY/ref=asc_df_B0044USWXY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198077767340&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11766214887799110121&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9052871&hvtargid=pla-350656822241&psc=1 Although I've never used/tried Army Painter, I understand the dark tone is close to this Minwax shade (however, a lot more expensive) :) Warm regards, Dean
