Celts/Gauls Rebase and Harold Godwinson

Decided to rebase some Celt/Gaul figures onto Litko bases; infantry three figures per 40mm square, and two cav per 50mm square. They were previously based for WAB - and used in games as Seleucid mercenaries. They are mostly Old Glory figures with a few Gripping Beast command figures. Most of the shields have LBMS transfers; a few of the Gripping Beast shields were hand-painted as the transfers wouldn't fit onto them.
Encouraged by the way the modified Hail Caesar rules played out with the Siege of Haengju game, I plan to use these against the Warlord Games EIR troops that have never seen action as of yet.

To round out the units, I painted up a few more Gripping Beast figures using the method of block painting and Minwax staining - I am still using the remnants of a can that is practically gone save a few drops.
The Harold figure in front is a Crusader Miniatures figure that was used to round out another base of Saxons.
Here is Harold in front of some Old Glory light armored Norman that were also rebased two per on 50mm squares.
I've just about had it with single-based figures and casualty removal for most games, so eventually all my figures will be multi-based. I'm thinking of rebasing my Norman and HYW French knights three-per 80X50mm bases. Another Litko order may be placed soon.

  3. Very nice work Dean - I think you are one the right track with the multiple basing, with the switch from WAB to HC... You may have to rename your blog! I must admit it was a mechanism that was a bit annoying I found playing Warhammer, especially at the end of the game when you had to tidy them all back onto their movement trays ... For myself currently I am still going with single figs for LOTR skirmish gaming... though may have to look at movement trays for them if I want to try Hail-Caesar-Fantasy with them as well...

    1. Thanks, Scott. I am also still going with singles for stuff like Bolt Action and possibly Muskets and Tomahawks (if I ever get the nerve to spend the money for the rulebook). Best, Dean

  4. Thanks, Gents!

@ Phil - unnerving as they are, it still beats painting plaids on trousers :)!

@ Scott - oh, and don't get me started when I had multiple games with most units completely wiped out and having to put the figures back onto trays before the next game. Insult to injury!

    Warm regards, Dean

    1. Thanks, Ray. In addition to these - I also rebased the previously rebased Saxons and Warlord EIR! I decided to go with three per base instead of four. They look better in three's and also expanded the number of bases to increase units.

  10. Not always a fun job rebasing, but great results here Dean.

  11. I never thought about how much work it would be to have singly based figures in a wargame. In many fantasy games you're just dealing with factions and not armies, so it's not needed.

You've done a cracking job with getting these guys together as multiples. Don't envy you the work!

    1. Thanks, Anne. The multi-basing isn't the best for all games; for WW1/2 skirmish the figures are best kept as singles.

  12. Really nice, Dean!

Oddly, having personally used large and ever larger multibases, over the years, I am now basing a few figures individually, for skirmish. :-)

    1. Thanks, Simon. Well, with your inventory, I'm sure you'll still have plenty enough multi-based :)!

  13. Excellent work, Dean. As far as basing, I always singly base my 28mm figures in case I need it for a skirmish game. But I multi-base my 15mm and 1/72 stuff.

    1. Thanks! I still have a few (like early Samurai - Heian period) singly based, as well as WW1/2 stuff. The games I intend to use most of the Ancient/Medievals are better suited for multi-bassed figs.

  14. Love your Gaul!. Whenever someone on the court yells out "shirts or skins," you know which side these fellows will choose!

I continue to be awed by your deep and wonderful bench of armies, Dean.
