After selling off my rather large collection of ECW figures to a buddy a couple of years ago, I never expected to return to the period. However, I soon thereafter picked up a Warlord Games Battalia Starter Army for a fraction of the price (less than a single unit box). The box has been sitting in the garage for sometime, and I figured it was time to work on it. Here's the pike and shotte, as well as command figures, along with some inspirational reading material. They're based as singles for skirmish games like The Pikeman's Lament. Plan to paint one force as Prince Rupert's Bleu Coates and the other in red like the New Model Army.
Still need to work on the 24 cavalry and 10 firelocks. Besides this project, I also worked on some 1/1200th Imjin War ships for At The Height Of Battle. I was blessed to have inherited the ships that were in David Sullivan's collection. As you may recall, David's blog is "I Live With Cats", and he passed away last year after a sudden illness. He and I had collaborated a bit with these rules. This site was created late in 2008, just a few years after first becoming involved in wargaming. As you can tell by the name, WAB was my introduction to this community. I appreciate the following and comments this blog receives, and give all thanks and credit to my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. It may seem odd that this blog appears to focus on the folly of mankind's continuous warfare, but I believe I can still enjoy this hobby so long as I put Him first in all I do. Maranatha!

ECW Revisted & Other Projects
In fact, he first saw the ships was when I hosted a game a couple of years ago. He went all in and actually ended up getting more ships than me! He used the same basing dimensions I used - so they are a perfect match. Here they are all together.
IIt's barely noticeable, but his ships are a little lighter in color, and none of his masts have flags - I think he clipped them off for some reason. I touched up his ships to better match the ones I have. Basically highlighted the sails, and also painted the forecastles on the larger ships.

It's funny how old favourites come around again, good luck with the new army. I am thinking about revisiting my Crimea War miniatures especially now Warlord Games have broadened their range.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michael. I agree - returning to an old, somewhat forgotten, period is a bit refreshing. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteSomething old and something new (well, sort of!). Looking forward to seeing both on your gaming table.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jonathan! Yes, although it's kind of odd that I'm painting up the same type of figues I had a ton of in the past, it's also somewhat nice to work on them again. This time on a much smaller scale. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteLooking forward to seeing how these various projects develop.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Richard. These will be much more skirmish gaming oriented - so somewhat more manageable in scope. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteBack to the ECW Dean got to be good 👍 and thats a lot of ships for any game !
ReplyDeleteThanks, Matt. ECW on a much smaller scale this time around. I kind of went all in before - thankfully, those figures are in good hands of a close gaming buddy who has repurposed them for TYW. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteGreat to here you'll be painting up ECW again. Also good to hear that poor David's ships will set sail once again.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for the kind words, Ray! Yes, I'm happy with both projects - the Imjin War naval games will always be in honor of David's memory. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteTwo great projects added to your list. Should be fun to see your choices and experience with the 'new' periods.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joe! Appreciate the kind words and visit. Warm regards, Dean
DeleteThe Battalia box sounds like it was a real bargain Dean - I expect you will have them all painted up by Monday 22 June!
ReplyDeleteGreat collection of Oriental fighting ships, too.
Thanks, Keith. Haha, I'm going to try enjoy painting them - as opposed to rushing through them. We'll see. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteHave a good start of new projects!!! I've had experience with this Warlord starter set:

But I prefer metal figurines. They have their own individual character
Thank you very much, Alexy!. Yes, metals are nice, but these are definitely a bargain, and the detail not bad IMO. Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteSounds very, very interesting Dean!
ReplyDeleteThanks again, Michal! Warmest regards, Dean
DeleteThat's sad to hear (belatedly) about David. His was a blog that I used to enjoy visiting from time to time. Not for some time now though and now I know why.
ReplyDeleteIt's fabulous that you are able to use his fleet. I am sure that it would have given him great pleasure to know it.
Best wishes, James
Thank you very much, James. Yes, David's passing was a great loss to not only his own family (sisters and parents in their 90's!), but also the gaming community here. He was loved and respected by so many. Kindest regards, Dean
DeleteGood to hear your returning to the war of three kingdoms and nice to be reminded about Davids blog I always enjoyed his meticulous approach to everything!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks, Iain. Although I'll have nowhere near the amount of figures I had before, I'll will enjoy getting these on the table. Warmest regards, Dean
