As these are production line painted figures, the highlighting is haphazard and not really following the folds of cloth and such. I just added a few strokes of highlight here and there. |
This site was created late in 2008, just a few years after first becoming involved in wargaming. As you can tell by the name, WAB was my introduction to this community. I appreciate the following and comments this blog receives, and give all thanks and credit to my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. It may seem odd that this blog appears to focus on the folly of mankind's continuous warfare, but I believe I can still enjoy this hobby so long as I put Him first in all I do. Maranatha!

Perry WotR Infantry - WIP +3
Added some highlighting after spraying them with Testor's Dulcote. They're pretty much done, except for the addition of the livery badge decals. Anyway, these will be the core figures for a couple of games I hope to host at next year's big local convention, Enfilade! Granted it's still a year away, but I like to have stuff ready early and then veg out for a while prior to the con.
Looking great, Dean! I am amazed at the number of figures you tackle in one pop.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jonathan! Yes, I'm quite surprised myself! :) Warm regards, Dean

ReplyDeleteThank you for the high compliment, Mike! The Foot Knights are next - they've already been sprayed with silver and awaiting a black ink/wash. Regards, Dean
DeleteThose are turning out good Dean, good job.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gabe! The Minwax is the ticket! :) Warm regards, Dean
DeleteDiscussion time: You mention dulcoting them before highlighting? Explain process please for learning purposes. Then your mentioning stain, you using dip method, miniwax, army painter?
ReplyDeleteCheers
Kevin
PS
Oh and at arms length the best painted figures look just the same as production ones. I'd be happy with what you did in my collection.
Hey, Kevin! So, the process: 1) Block paint the figures; 2) brush on Minwax Tudor Satin stain (Polyshades Acrylic) - I dab off excess pooling with thinner if needed; 3) After thoroughly dried (24 hrs approx. in good weather) - spray light coat of Testor's Dulcote; 4) Final step is add highlights to taste - in fact, you could skip this step if in a rush, and do the highlighting at a later date. And thank you so much for the compliments! Best Regards, Dean
DeleteAh, so your doing the dulcote because you stained them first, and this gives something for the highlights to stick to. This is the reason?
DeleteWell, I actually did a repaint on some of the figures (blue & white tunics reversed) before the Dulcote, but after the stain had dried. The paint took to the stain well enough, IMO. However, the Dulcote probably does help with the acrylic paint highlighting - especially if it is a bit watered down. In any case, the Dulcoting before highlighting is just the process I've been using.
DeleteYou're a painting machine - they look great for tabletop figures.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Steven. Yes, this painting project's fruition will be the use of the figures at next year's gaming con, Enfilade! Warm Regards, Dean
